Meredith Moench comes to Whatcom Community
College after 20 years as an instructor for the University of Utah where
she taught drawing, painting, design and interdisciplinary courses in
creative process. She especially enjoys working with non-traditional
students and those who consider themselves "not talented." Her approach
to students has always been that anyone can learn to draw or paint, and
that a student's progress has more to do with motivation and receptivity
to learning than with any kind of innate talent. In addition to her 20
year academic teaching career, she has also been very active in
community projects including the Utah Arts Festival, Artist in Schools
residency program, and Art Space, an artists' work/live urban renewal
project located in downtown Salt Lake City.
Meredith holds a B.A. in Fine
Arts from Syracuse University and a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and
Painting from the University of Utah. Her artwork has been shown
extensively in galleries and public spaces in the Western United States
and in Europe.
An experienced backpacker, Meredith spends as
much time outdoors as possible. Her love of the natural world has
expressed itself intimately in her garden, where she is developing
native wildlife habitat, as well as in her political work for various environmental and peace causes. She views art
as a highly individual life path and appreciates having the opportunity
to help others discover the joy and personal expansion that art can bring to
their lives.
