New Manager’s Toolkit:
The Essential Skills Step-by-Step
  (4 hours each)

Module 1       Developing Your Management Style and Strengths
Identifying your core aptitudes and a management style best suited to your personal strengths and non-strengths using the Myers-Briggs and StrengthFinder assessments, exploring habits and disciplines essential to both successful leadership and personal effectiveness.

Module 2       Time Management and Organizational Skills
Managing time and projects efficiently, using Outlook or day-timers as time management tools, prioritizing tasks for yourself and team members, controlling paperwork, developing project management skills, using delegation to empower your team.

Module 3       Strategic Planning / Goal Setting / Problem Solving / Decision Making
Utilizing strategic planning concepts and methods, generating ambitious and achievable goals with team buy-in, arriving at root causes of problems and determining the best corrective action, managing change and accompanying stress.

Module 4       Sharpening Your Communication Skills
Managing and expressing your feelings and judgments effectively, examining assumptions and avoiding “jumping to delusions,” giving and receiving useful feedback, using empowering questions instead of telling, using empathic listening skills.

Module 5       Building and Maintaining a High Performance Team
Leading effective meetings, creating agreement and getting buy-in, establishing common visions and goals, using creative acknowledgments, understanding what motivates employees.

Module 6       Correcting Problem Behavior and Poor Performance
Getting to root causes, overcoming tardiness/ absenteeism, changing unacceptable performance through behavior modification, providing meaningful feedback, dealing with harassment issues, disciplining by means of positive improvement plans.

Module 7       Controlling Conflict in the Workplace
Handling disagreement and complaints, avoiding damaging conflict, transforming conflict into positive energy, understanding and avoiding harassment issues.

Module 8       Personnel Issues
Selecting and hiring employees, understanding the importance of diversity, getting employees off to a good start, retaining valuable employees, conducting performance evaluations and preparing performance plans, terminating employees, handling payroll duties, recognizing legal issues in personnel and records management.

Module 9       Accounting and Budgeting Basics for Managers
Exploring the Accounting Equation, recording financial transactions via debits and credits, posting to the general ledger, understanding financial statements (including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements), using financial statements for forecasting and in managing a business.

Module 10   Growing as a Manager
Managing yourself and dealing with interruptions and time wasters, balancing work and personal life, evaluating your own performance and pursuing additional training, creating relationships with senior management and peers, gaining visibility and influence in the community, facing rather than fighting change, staying abreast of technological change.

A Stepping Up to Manager Certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the Big Picture Over-view and 10 New Manager’s Toolkit Modules.
