Discover the New SAM! Seattle Art Museum Guided Tour

Wander and
wonder at the new SAM...in all its glory! Join more than 30,000
people who have already flocked to the new Seattle Art Museum
downtown to admire the 119,000 square feet of new space
including two free floors and more space for permanent and
touring exhibits. Marvel at the new acquisitions highlighted in
the exhibition and the art that has been in storage for years.
Our tour, guided by Bellingham artist Trish Harding, will
concentrate on the Wright Galleries for Modern & Contemporary
Art; the Simonyi Special Exhibition Galleries (including the
unique Italian Wood-Paneled Room featuring over 1,000 pieces of
porcelain from SAM’s own collection); and the special exhibition
spaces dedicated to new acquisitions and permanent collections.
We will leave from our rendezvous point at the Sehome Village
Starbucks promptly at 8:30 AM and travel by relaxing coach
furnished by our day trip partners, Bellair Charters. Bring a
sack lunch or grab a bite at Taste, SAM's new restaurant. One
hour lunch break provided. Entrance fee to museum is included in
course fee.

Culinary Road Trip: The Bay Cafe on Lopez Island

If you enjoy
exquisite cuisine served in a picturesque setting, this day has
been designed for you! The Bay Cafe--featured in Northwest Best
Places, Bon Apetit, Gourmet, Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure,
Coastal Living, and The New York Times--is our road trip
destination with fun stops along the way.
Award-winning chef/owner Daren Holscher will present a memorable
lunch showcasing fresh, local ingredients and signature dishes
of the fall season: organic golden beet soup; a salad of Lopez
organic greens tossed in a fresh herb vinaigrette, apple slices,
and gorgonzola; your choice of fresh pistachio-crusted San Juan
Sockeye Salmon with Lemon Basil Gremolata, or Sweet Grass Farm
Wagyu (Kobe Beef) Rissole with fire-roasted tomato relish, or
organic red beet risotto with sautéed bright lights Swiss chard.
The sweet finale: your choice of a rustic apple tart with Lopez
Creamery vanilla ice cream or Lopez wild Blackberry and port
wine Sorbet.
We will also visit Holly B's Bakery
and Lopez Island Vineyards. Time permitting, we will wander the
quaint streets of Lopez Village with its art galleries,
bookstore and gift shops. Our tour guide, Luanne Williams,
invites you to join her at our rendezvous point at the Sehome
Village Starbucks promptly at 8:00 AM. We will travel by
relaxing coach furnished by our day trip partners, Bellair
Charters. Three-course gourmet lunch and ferry tolls are
included in class fee. Wine will be available for purchase
during lunch and at the winery.

Culinary Road Trip: Vancouver, B.C.'s Chinatown

Don't miss this road trip, rich in
adventure, culture, and great food! Our popular and entertaining
cooking instructor Mary Ellen Carter will be our expert guide as
we walk through the busy market streets enjoying the sights,
tastes, and smells of historical Chinatown in downtown
Vancouver, B.C. We will enjoy an authentic dim sum lunch, visit
the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen classic Chinese garden for a stroll, and
browse through the famous Ming Wo Cookware Store before
returning home. Class departs from WCC Campus--Laidlaw Main
Entrance promptly at 9:00 AM and travels by relaxing bus
furnished by our day trip partners, Bellair Charters. Entrance
fee to garden is included in course fee; cost of lunch is not
included. Proper border identification papers must be shown
before boarding bus.

Culinary Road Trip: Taste of India Guided Tour--Surrey, B.C.

Spend a day
exploring the Indian side of Surrey, B. C. with our popular
cooking instructor Valerie Viegas. She will take you on a guided
tour of the area, rich in both culture and the flavors of India.
We will visit an Indian grocery store, immersing ourselves in
the world of exotic spices and ingredients central to Indian
cooking; then we will move on to a clothing store to experience
the stunning fabrics and styles of Indian dress. The grand
finale--a guided lunch experience at one of Valerie's favorite
haunts--Mehfil--an authentic Indian buffet-style restaurant. We
will leave from our rendezvous point at Whatcom Community
College promptly at 9:00 AM and travel by relaxing coach
furnished by our day trip partners, Bellair Charters. Lunch cost
is not included in class fee. Proper border identification
papers must be shown before boarding bus.

Wine Tasting
on the Nooksack

| What a perfect
way to spend an autumn day--a scenic float down the beautiful
Nooksack River combined with lunch and wine tasting! The day
begins with a peaceful three-hour float trip on the Nooksack,
taking in the scenery and wildlife along the way, and ends with
a stop at Mt. Baker Vineyards where you will taste handcrafted
wines while enjoying the view of majestic Mt. Baker. Rafting
safety gear and a box lunch will be provided. Students are
responsible for $2 tasting fee payable to the winery; must be 21
and show valid ID to wine taste. Directions to meeting place
will be sent with class receipt; transportation is provided from
the meeting location. Class meets rain or shine, so please dress
accordingly. Session is closed. |
Floating the Nooksack: Fall Colors and Salmon Spawning |
Join us for a
day of scenery and excitement, drifting along the Main Fork of
the beautiful Nooksack River! Starting at the Highway 9 bridge,
this guided ten-mile rafting adventure will take you past
Suzanne Falls, impressive clay cliffs, spawning salmon, and
colorful fall foliage. Experienced naturalist guides, led by
David Button of Pacific Northwest Float Trips, will take you up
close to nature in a safe setting as you learn about the
ecosystem, animal life, plant distribution, and history along
the Nooksack. Tour will also include a short nature hike up
Suzanne Falls. Directions to meeting place will be sent with
class receipt; transportation is provided from the meeting
location. Class meets rain or shine, so please dress
accordingly. Please bring a sack lunch; all safety gear will be
provided.

Haunted Fairhaven Walking Tour |
Just in time for
Halloween... this is your opportunity to explore the
supernatural side of the Fairhaven district! Fairhaven's own
Dirty Dan Harris (a.k.a. Jim Rich) will be your tour guide
through the haunted history and long-ago legends of the area as
you visit landmarks such as Sycamore Square (formerly the Mason
Block), the Pythias Building (now the Colophon Cafe), the Morgan
Block, and Finnegan's Alley. His tales of phantom footsteps and
eerie apparitions, reported over the years by local residents
and workers, are guaranteed to give you the chills! This walking
tour is geared toward teens and adults and will meet rain or
shine, so please dress for the weather. Class will meet in lobby
of Fairhaven Village Inn.
