Gardeners' Road Trip: Bellevue Botanical Garden
 
Don't miss our inaugural Gardeners' Road Trip as we head south to the renowned Bellevue Botanical Garden— comprised of 53 acres of display gardens, woodlands, meadows and wetlands. We'll stroll through the dramatic display with our gardening expert, Debra Olberg and garden docents, enjoying the premiere Northwest Perennial Border Garden, Waterwise Garden, Yao Garden, and Alpine Rock Garden. You will be inspired as spring unveils her "stars" -- camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, and primulas, just to name a few. After enjoying a box lunch in the gardens, we will make our last stop at Flower World--an amazing retail nursery in Maltby with 15 acres of display areas! You'll have time to relax, wander, and maybe make a purchase or two. Class departs from the WCC campus promptly at 8:00 AM and travels by relaxing coach furnished by our day trip partners, Bellair Charters. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. A delicious box lunch is provided; lunch cost is included in class fee.

Plan Your Spring Vegetable Garden Now!
Now is the time to complete the necessary preparations for planting your prize vegetable garden! Tailored to the beginner, this class will introduce you to the joys of gardening. You will learn about soil conditioning and preparation, garden location and design, and selection of seeds or starts. Master Gardener David Simonson will also talk tools, drip irrigation, and pest control. The seed catalogues are arriving, so now is the time to get started!

Spring in the Garden
The arrival of spring signals the rebirth of the garden and the gardener. This workshop is jam-packed with valuable information on how to build healthy soil, plant properly, fertilize, mulch, when to start seeds, plant new lawns, how to care for spring bulbs, roses, and much more. Instructor Debra Olberg invites you to bring your questions for discussion. Class may venture outdoors so dress accordingly.

Landscape Design
Join us for an inspiring hands-on course for anyone currently at a loss as to how and where to begin a landscape design project. You will gain a new appreciation for trees, shrubs and perennials based on age-old concepts that are simple to learn and easy to apply. Through slides, handouts, and a field trip, you will gain the confidence and knowledge to create a garden you can enjoy for many years to come. Instructor Debra Olberg has over 23 years of experience in the nursery and landscape industry. Course includes four classroom sessions and a field trip (date to be arranged in class). Please bring a ruler and pencil to first class.

This class will focus on plants native to the west slope of the Pacific Northwest that are attractive, multi-faceted, and versatile. These plants beautify any landscape and attract birds, butterflies, and many other creatures. They can also play a vital role in the human process of reconnecting to the natural world and gaining a wealth of mental, physical and spiritual health benefits. Instructor Nick Sky is a lifelong lover of plants, a natural historian, biogeographer, botanist, ecologist and environmental educator. Organic Home Gardening
 
Learn to work with nature to create and grow your very own "green" (sustainable) and nutritious organic garden. This timely course covers the how-tos of growing delicious organic vegetables, flavorful herbs, and fragrant flowers. Instructor and organic gardener Gretchen Hoyt will discuss soil health, how to conserve water through mulching and composting methods, starting seed and transplanting, fertilizing, basic pest control, and harvesting. Three classroom sessions will prepare you for the last class--a fascinating field trip to a local organic farm on Saturday, May 31 (time to be arranged in class). Instructor Gretchen Hoyt of Alm Hill Gardens in Everson has owned and managed a successful organic garden for 35 years. She welcomes all levels of gardening experience.

From Garden to Vase
If you love to surround yourself with fragrant, beautiful flowers--both indoors and in your garden--then this workshop is for you! Our popular landscape design instructor, Debra Olberg, and talented floral design instructor, Cheryl Jackson, have teamed up to take you through the full transformation from growing seedlings to putting the final touches on your home-grown summer bouquets. Debra will spend the first half of the workshop discussing how to create a cutting garden including plant selection, garden design, watering and fertilizing. Cheryl will then share tips and techniques for creating stunning, fresh-cut flower bouquets to decorate your home, patio, office, or anywhere! Bring some flowers and/or foliage from your garden for sharing and swapping, pruning clippers, and a sharp knife. Containers and supplemental flowers will be provided. You will go home with a beautiful bouquet designed by you! $7 materials fee is included in course fee. Bring a snack or sack lunch to enjoy while you work!

Floral Design: An Introduction
Learn to create breathtaking floral arrangements with a professionally designed look for your home, office, or those special occasions on your calendar! In this fun and rewarding introductory course, you will discover the tools, tips, and tricks of the trade as you learn the basics of floral design. Instructor Cheryl Jackson, owner of Courtyard Gardens in Everson, will inspire you to create beautiful arrangements. Each class session will yield take-home results. Please bring a sharp knife or pruners. All other materials for the first class project will be supplied; a supply list for subsequent projects will be discussed at first class. At first class session each student will take home a beautiful centerpiece with a retail value of $25.00!

Collecting Silver Antiques--Tips of the Trade
 
If you are an Antiques Roadshow fan, then this workshop is your dream come true...especially if you love buying and collecting silver treasures! Taught by master Silversmith David Friedman and his wife Paula, a Silver Antiques Specialist, you will learn all about the world of silver antiques, including how to read sterling silver versus silver plate hallmarks, "guesstimate" the value of a silver piece, properly clean and maintain sterling silver and silver-plate, find and buy silver at garage sales so that you get real value for your money, and more. Bring a silver piece to class for identification, valuation, and discussion. Plan to sample silver cleaning products at course's end.

Local expert Tom McFarland of McFarland Enterprises will present an in-depth homeowner's maintenance guide covering everything from seasonal maintenance tips to all you need to know about household operating systems such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, exteriors, foundations, and roofs. Save yourself thousands of dollars worth of repairs by taking this important step to preserve the long-term value and safety of your home. One hour lunch break provided. Session is closed.

Mosaic Stepping Stones
Adorn your yard and pathways with unique and beautiful stones designed by you! In this hands-on workshop, discover how simple and fun decorating your own pre-cast stepping stones can be. Using an easy and fast method, you will design your own pattern using a wide variety of colorful ceramic pieces and interesting found objects. You may choose to bring optional items from home to incorporate into your design (marbles, hardware, beads, beach glass, etc.). Instructor Jean Kroll is a mosaic artist who has exhibited her work in the Whatcom/Skagit County area. Bring one 12-inch diameter pre-cast cement stepping stone with smooth surface--available at local home improvement stores; instructor will supply all other materials to transform your stepping stone into a one-of-a-kind work of art. $10 materials fee payable to instructor at class.

Interior Design: Creating a Personal Style at Home
Have you dreamed of creating rooms in your home that genuinely express who you are and how you want to live? Join accomplished architect and interior designer Rob Austin-Murphy in an exploration of personal style and how it can be expressed when creating interior spaces. Rob will begin by sharing several professional designs that are truly expressive and original. These will be thoroughly critiqued and analyzed--building a foundation for recognizing well-conceived interiors, how they are created, and why they are successful. In the second class, students will present published designs that they admire. The class will then critique and discuss these designs, followed by each student presenting a written statement about the unique style they wish to develop. In the final session, students will share how they would implement their personal style through the selection of materials, finishes, furnishings and images. This is a class that will encourage personal exploration, self discovery, and expression of who you are and how you want to live--a truly unique educational experience not to be missed!
