Fly-fishing: An Introduction

wanted to learn to fly fish but it looked intimidating? Join
Scott Christensen, Certified Casting Instructor, to learn the
basics of casting, tackle selection, rigging, and knot tying.

Fly-Tying: Beginning
 |
Learn to create
fish-catching and eye-pleasing fly patterns from a pro!
Fly-tying techniques and material selection will be covered in
this introductory class. Fresh and saltwater patterns will be
covered. Instructor Scott Christensen has been tying for over 30
years and displays his work throughout the Northwest. $5
material fee payable to instructor at first class.

Historic Fairhaven Walking Tour |
| Just in time for
the annual "Dirty Dan Days" celebration in Fairhaven, this is
your opportunity to explore the intriguing past of this historic
district! Fairhaven's own Dirty Dan Harris (a.k.a. Jim Rich)
will be your tour guide as he discusses the legends,
architecture, and infamous founders of the area while you visit
landmarks such as Sycamore Square (formerly the "Mason Block"),
the Pythias Building (now the Colophon Cafe), the Morgan Block,
and Finnegan's Alley. This walking tour is geared toward teens
and adults and will meet rain or shine, so please dress for the
weather. Class will meet in Fairhaven--location details will be
sent with class receipt. Session is closed. |
Spring Walks, Hikes, and Trail Runs |
| Are you an avid
walker, hiker, runner, or a wistful novice who would like to be
inspired to get outdoors and exercise on foot this spring? Local
trail expert Doug McKeever will describe enough trails to keep
even the most seasoned walker or runner busy until the High
Cascades trails open. He will cover location, access, features
of interest, and degree of difficulty of trails in the Whatcom
and Skagit County foothills. This is a great opportunity to
extend your summer hiking season by learning which routes are
snow-free in spring! Course is suited for anyone from beginner
to expert. A valuable 40-page trail guide is included in course
fee. |

Wild Hikes and Beach Ramblings: The San Juans and Whidbey
Island |
| Experience the
beautiful wildflowers and magical orca sightings this time of
year! The islands of Northwest Washington number in the
hundreds, including more than two hundred within the San Juan
archipelago alone. Many more, like Whidbey, Camano, Fidalgo,
Cypress and Guemes, are close by though not officially part of
the San Juans. Taken all together, these magnificent islands
offer almost endless opportunities for easy walks and moderate
hikes. Through images, maps and discussion, local author Ken
Wilcox will offer insights and suggestions for spring and summer
walks, hikes and beach rambles on more than two dozen islands.
Don't let summer go by without exploring these treasures in our
own backyard! Class fee includes Ken's book, Hiking the San Juan
Islands. |

Wilderness Walking Essentials

| If you are
headed for a day’s walk on our local trails or an extended
stroll through the wilderness, this course will help you
discover the basic "how-tos" of safe, healthy, and comfortable
wilderness travel. Topics will range from essential gear and
water purification to how to deal with wildlife encounters and
considerations when choosing your route. Hands-on skills will be
practiced in the fundamental use of map and compass and the art
of hanging a food-storage bear-bag in a tree. Come join the fun
and get ready for a summer’s walk in our fabulous Northwest
wilderness. If you own a compass and/or bicycle or climbing
helmet, please bring them to class. Instructor Karen Edmundson
Bean is an award-winning director/cinematographer who has been
walking the backcountry worldwide for over 40 years. Session

The Joy of Birding |
| Are you fascinated by the birds you
see in your garden, at the shoreline or anywhere else you come
upon these wonders of the air? Spend a Saturday morning with
instructor Gwin Cooper, exploring the bird life of Washington
with an emphasis on those you are likely to see in Whatcom
County. Learn about the habits and migration patterns of our
local avian friends and the best places to view them. You will
leave class with a wealth of resources and inspired to continue
your new hobby year-round! Gwin Cooper is an avid bird watcher
who has a passion for birds of every feather. |

Adventures in Boating--A Course on Responsible Boating |
| Attention
boaters! Starting the first of this year, and phased in over the
next seven years, all boaters born after 1954 who wish to
operate a motorized vessel in Washington State waters will have
to complete an approved boater education course. This course,
taught by Whatcom County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Lann, fulfills
the state-mandated requirement. After successful completion you
will be issued a certificate that will allow you to receive your
Boater Education card and be in compliance with the new law. All
materials are included in course fee. Class includes a 30-minute
lunch break. |
