The Art and Life of Emily Carr

Explore the extensive body of work of renowned Canadian artist Emily Carr. Carr is best known for her depictions of the isolated nature of Vancouver Island and the Northwest Coast and was the first person to paint native villages and totem poles--most of which are gone today. Class will cover Carr's life as an early 20th century woman artist and her works. Instructor Alica Leppanen has an MA in Art History and specializes in Northwest Coast Indian Art.

The Art Around Us: Northwest Coast Native Art

Join in this fascinating exploration of the evolution of Northwest Coast peoples and their art. Class covers pre-historic to contemporary art, ceremonial artwork, and an introduction to form-line design. Learn to identify designs, tribal attributes, and techniques used by the Tlingit, Makah, Tsimshian, Haida, Heiltsuk, Nukalk, Kwakwaka-wakw', Nuuchah-nulth, and Salish tribes . Instructor Alica Leppanen has an MA in Art History and specializes in Northwest Coast Indian Art. Optional field trip to the University of British Columbia will be discussed at first class.

This is a great class for anyone who would like to try drawing for the first time or those wanting a refresher in basic skills. Colored Pencil Drawing

Discover the fine art medium of colored pencils! Local artist Katherine Morgan will teach techniques in layering, burnishing and lifting to create rich, glowing effects. Individualized instruction makes this class perfect for all skill levels--beginners are welcome and encouraged to enroll. Bring drawing paper and any colored pencils you may have to first class. Nature Drawing: A Beginner's Course

Whether you are an amateur naturalist or simply a nature lover, nature drawing can add depth and pleasure to your experiences. Using black and white media, artist Meredith Moench will introduce basic drawing skills while encouraging creative possibilities suggested by natural forms. Bring a 14x17 spiral-bound medium weight sketch pad and 2B graphite pencil to the first session; additional materials will be discussed in class. This course is recommended for students planning to continue with Meredith's Botanical Illustration course.

Botanical Illustration

If you are a plant and flower lover, this class is for you! Appealing to both the scientific and artistic, botanical illustration emphasizes accuracy of detail while exploring the natural beauty of plants. Artist Meredith Moench will teach you the special watercolor techniques used by botanical artists. Although no previous painting experience is necessary, it is recommended that students have a basic knowledge of drawing. Meredith's class, Nature Drawing: A Beginner's Course is an excellent foundation. Materials list will be sent with class receipt. Class does not meet May 31.

Children's Book Illustration

Immerse yourself in the world of children’s book illustration in this introductory course. Through in-class assigments using a variety of media, you will learn basic techniques to complete illustrations for young readers. Also learn the business side of children’s book illustration, including what it takes to get your work seen by the right people. Character consistency, portfolios, contracts, and other topics are also covered. Craig Orback is an award-winning illustrator of over 15 children's books. Basic drawing skills are helpful but not required. Some homework is required. Materials list will be sent with class receipt.

Introduction to the Potter's Wheel

Join us in Whatcom's beautiful Roe Studio and learn to use the potter's wheel to create unique designs and useful art--such as bowls, cups, and jars--in clay. Practice the basic skills of centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing pottery to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Artist Gene Lewis welcomes beginning and experienced students. Clay and glaze will be provided; an additional supply list will be sent with class receipt. Course includes a final one-hour critique session, time/date to be arranged in class.
