Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park--A Guided Tour
Spend a summer day experiencing Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park, where a nine-acre industrial site has been transformed into an open and vibrant "green-space" for art! Sweeping views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains will take your breath away as you follow a 2,200-foot Z-shaped path from a steel and glass pavilion to Elliott Bay. With local artist Trish Harding as your guide, you’ll experience a variety of important outdoor sculpture, gardens, and a wide range of environmental waterfront restorations. We will leave from our rendezvous point at WCC--Laidlaw Center Main Entrance--promptly at 8:30 AM and travel by relaxing bus furnished by our day trip partners, Bellair Charters. Bring a sack lunch or grab a bite at one of the waterfront eateries. One hour lunch break provided.

Field Sketching on Lummi Island
Explore beautiful Lummi Island--easily accessible by a 10-minute ferry ride--while experiencing how fun, immediate, and portable field sketching can be! Specific drawing skills learned in this workshop can add depth and enjoyment to any outdoor experience--your next mountain hike or simply a pleasant afternoon in your backyard. We will use pencil, pen, and watercolor pencils as our drawing media. Artist/instructor Meredith Moench has been conducting outdoor painting and drawing workshops for over 20 years, helping students to connect more deeply with nature through art. A materials list and specific directions to the ferry and where to meet on Lummi Island will be sent with class receipt. Bring a lunch and dress appropriately, as class will meet rain or shine!

Sculpting in Clay
Join local artist Trish Harding in the Roe Studio to explore clay sculpture as an artistic medium. She invites both beginning students who will be experiencing clay for the first time and returning students who would like to expand their skills. Trish will discuss and utilize various hand building techniques, including slab, coil, and pinch modeling methods. Surface design and decoration will be explored as you create your own sculpture under her inspiring guidance. Clay and glaze material costs are included in course fee; additional class supplies will be discussed at first class session. Class includes a one-hour critique and pick-up of finished works on Friday, August 15, 9-10 a.m.

Plein Air Painting (Painting Outdoors)
Follow in the footsteps of the French impressionists, who so brilliantly embraced "plein air" painting (painting outdoors). Unlike painting in a studio, you will see vivid colors, intense light, and the dramatic summer sky with its ever-changing cloud patterns. Also experience Whatcom's beautiful campus with its fountains, open fields, natural wetlands, wildlife, Mt. Baker and the foothills in the distance, and scenes of student life. Accomplished local artist Trish Harding invites you to paint in the media of your choice--watercolors, pastel, acrylic, or oil. Trish paints primarily out-of-doors and has experience teaching all of the above media. Her individualized instruction makes the class perfect for all skill levels. Bring a sack lunch and whatever supplies you already have for the media of your choice. List of additional outdoor painting equipment/supplies will be sent with class receipt.

Mosaic Art: An Introductory Workshop
Learn the basics of mosaic art as you create a colorful wall-hanging in this introductory class. Using an easy method, you will design your own pattern with a wide variety of colorful ceramic pieces and interesting found objects. Instructor Jean Kroll is a mosaic artist who has exhibited her work in the Whatcom/Skagit County area. Jean will provide all materials needed for your project, including a vast selection of colorful shards. You are also welcome to bring your own items from home (broken dishes, beads, beach glass, etc.). $10 materials fee payable to instructor at class.

Travel Sketching
Whether planning a mountain hike or European vacation, you can enrich your travel and outdoor experiences with your own sketchbook and simple, portable drawing materials. This class will cover specific pen and pencil techniques as well as basic perspective. As you gain confidence in your drawing skills, you will be able to capture depth and proportion more quickly and accurately. Class will be held in our campus classroom and will also move outdoors, weather permitting. Whether you are just beginning or looking for a refresher, instructor Meredith Moench can help guide you to a more enjoyable on location drawing experience. For the first class, please bring an 11x14 inch sketchbook, pencil, and eraser. Additional media options will be discussed in class. Class does not meet July 3.

Summer Watercolors Studio
Join in this class especially created for new watercolorists who would like to continue beyond the basic level. With a special emphasis on working outdoors, our classroom studio will serve as a base camp with time spent during each session painting outside directly from nature. With ample individual instruction from artist/instructor Meredith Moench, you will gain confidence both in technique and in your own inner artist. Whether you have had some basic instruction or have dabbled on your own, this class will give you an opportunity to enhance your painting skills while soaking up the sun! A supply list will be sent with class receipt. Class does not meet July 4.

Art and Sculpture Walking Tour of Whatcom's Campus
 
Spend a lingering summer evening on Whatcom's beautiful campus for a guided walking tour of the college's impressive art works and sculptures. Trish Harding, local artist and Community Education art instructor, and Ray White, Whatcom's VP for Administrative Services, will co-host the tour which promises to be fascinating, entertaining, and rich in art and architectural detail. The Gathering, Cosmic Totem, Levitating Sphere, and Japanese-style water feature are just a few of the works that will be featured in this evening devoted to art appreciation. Bring a friend and discover intriguing and awe-inspiring works of art as you take an enchanting stroll around the campus. There is no fee for this tour but pre-registration is required as space is limited.

Introduction to the Potter's Wheel
Join us in Whatcom's beautiful Roe Studio and learn to use the potter's wheel to create unique designs and useful art in clay. You will learn the basic skills of centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing pottery to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Student creations may include bowls, cups, cylinders, and jars. Course includes a final one-hour critique session, time/date to be arranged in class. Instructor/artist Gene Lewis enjoys teaching his craft and welcomes both beginning and experienced pottery students. Colored Pencil Drawing
Discover colored pencils, a medium that has recently come into its own as a fine art. Katherine Morgan, local artist and teacher, will teach techniques in layering, burnishing and lifting to create rich, glowing effects. You will be surprised at the results! Individualized instruction makes this class perfect for all skill levels--beginners are welcome and encouraged to enroll! Bring drawing paper and any colored pencils you may have to first class. Additional required supplies will be explained at first class session.

Botanical Illustration
If you are a plant and flower lover, here is a class for you! Appealing to both the scientific and artistic, botanical illustration emphasizes accuracy of detail while also exploring the natural beauty of plants. You will begin by observing and carefully drawing your subject from life. Instructor/artist Meredith Moench will then teach you the special watercolor techniques used by botanical artists to create finished illustrations. Although no previous painting experience is necessary, it is recommended that students have a basic knowledge of drawing before taking this class. (Meredith's Nature Drawing: A Beginner's Course is an excellent foundation.) A materials list will be sent with class receipt.

Drum Design & Paint Workshop
If you are enthralled by the art of Native American drum making, spend a day with award-winning drum maker Ramon Murillo as he teaches you how to first create a unique design and then paint it on a drum. Ramon will guide you through his design process, using animal characteristics and world symbols to determine your authentic representation of self. Class will also explore the issues of appropriation and misappropriation of Native American symbols and ceremonies. As a special treat, Ramon will drum and sing traditional Native American songs. Please bring an unpainted hand drum to class; drums and drumstick will also be available for purchase in class ($50). Additional $5 material fee is payable to instructor at class. Lunch break from 12:30-1:00 PM.

Dare to Draw: Sketching Outdoors
This is a great class for anyone who would like to try drawing for the first time or for those wanting a refresher in basic drawing skills. For a fun summer twist, we will move outdoors to enjoy our local parks and natural settings. Instructor Katherine Morgan will lead you through a number of exercises to train the eye, hand, and imagination to work as a team. As you progress from contour line drawings to the use of shading, you will see your drawing skills improve right before your eyes! Course is based on the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Bring a #2 pencil and white sketch pad to class. Outdoor meeting locations will be provided at first session.

Experience Watercolors! A Beginner's Course
Join in this beginning watercolor class and discover how delightful watercolor painting can be! Course will include step-by-step exercises that will demystify the painting process. With an abundance of individual instruction and encouragement, you will soon gain the self-confidence to begin creating your own watercolors. With 30 years of experience teaching students of all levels and abilities, artist Meredith Moench will guide you through an exploration of your own inner artist. Summer Acrylics & Oils
 
Every artist, beginning or experienced, can create works that shine with spirit and clarity. Whether you are new to acrylics and oils or are an established artist seeking inspiration, local artist Ellen Brown invites you to join her as she guides you through creating a painting with strong composition while retaining your own unique style. Starting with basic topics such as tools, paint, color mixing and composition, you will learn painting techniques that strengthen and enhance your vision, including glazing, impasto, scraping, rubbing out, and more. Students will work on topics of their choice--still life, landscapes, or imaginative abstracts. If the weather allows, class may move outside for plein air work. Supply list will be sent with class receipt.
