Wilderness Walking Essentials
If you are headed for a day’s walk on our local trails or an extended stroll through the wilderness, this course will help you discover the basic "how-tos" of safe, healthy, and comfortable wilderness travel. Topics will range from essential gear and water purification to how to deal with wildlife encounters and considerations when choosing your route. Learn the fundamentals of using a map and compass as well as the art of hanging a food-storage bearbag in a tree. If you own a compass and/or bicycle or climbing helmet, please bring them to class. Instructor Karen Edmundson Bean is an award-winning director/cinematographer who has been walking the backcountry worldwide for over 40 years.

The Joy of Birding
Are you fascinated by the birds you see in your garden, at the shoreline or anywhere else you come upon these wonders of the air? Spend a Saturday morning with instructor Gwin Cooper, exploring the bird life of Washington with an emphasis on species you are likely to see in Whatcom County. Learn about the habits and migration patterns of our local avian friends and the best places to view them. You will leave class with a wealth of resources and inspired to continue your new hobby year-round! Gwin Cooper is an avid birdwatcher who has a passion for birds of every feather.

Adventures in Boating--A Course on Responsible Boating
Attention boaters! Starting this year, and phased in over the next seven years, all boaters born after 1954 who wish to operate a motorized vessel in Washington State waters will be required to complete an approved Boater Education course. This course, taught by Whatcom County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Lann, fulfills the state-mandated requirement. After successful completion you will be issued a certificate that will allow you to receive your Boater Education card and be in compliance with the new law. All materials are included in course fee. Class includes a 30-minute lunch break.

Introduction to Whitewater Rafting
Join us for a day of adventure, fun, and magnificent scenery in this introduction to whitewater rafting! Experienced rafting guides, led by Dave Button of Pacific Northwest Float Trips, will take you from Gooddell Creek to Copper Creek within North Cascades National Park. You'll experience four exciting and heart-pumping rapids as you travel through ten miles of majestic alpine scenery on crystal clear glacier water. This day-trip will include four hours of history, scenery and fast-moving action as you view wildlife and learn about local Native American culture, mining in the area, and industry’s impact on this emerald green river. This whitewater adventure is a perfect outing for the family and is classified as Class II & III whitewater. Trip is suitable for ages 12 and up. Space is limited so early enrollment is encouraged! Participants will meet in Marblemount, WA off Hwy 20; driving instructions to meeting location will be sent with class receipt. Please bring a sack lunch. Due to the nature of this trip, no refunds or credits will be issued for cancellations received less than four business days prior.
