Information and Your Privacy
We know that protecting your
identity and privacy is important to you. Protecting information
about you is an important part of our jobs as well.
In order to register you for
classes, there is certain information that we need to receive. Information
such as your name, address, and date of birth helps us identify you from the
thousands of other students in our records--including many students with the
same names!
When this information is not
provided on your registration form, we cannot enroll you or have to spend extra time in
contacting you to complete the required information. This takes time
away from our principal mission, which is providing educational experiences.
Our actions on privacy are
guided by the Family Education and Privacy Act, which ensures that your
information is protected and used only for required educational purposes.
Unlike the business world, we cannot sell, share, or abuse your information
without serious consequences.
Why Do We Ask for...
-
Student ID Number
If you have taken credit classes at Whatcom you already have a
student ID
number. By asking for your ID if you have one, it helps us avoid creating a duplicate record
and keeps all your classes,
credit and non-credit, on one record.
-
Date of Birth Your
birth date is critical for us to be able to differentiate you from other
students. Since we no
longer use social security numbers as ID numbers, we identify you by
name and birth date. Without date of birth it can be extremely
difficult to tell students apart who have the same name. It may not seem
important now, but if you ever need a list of the classes you have
taken, the absence of a birth date could make
generating a report difficult, if not impossible.
-
Social Security Number
Your social security number is no longer used as an ID number and no
longer shows up on most paperwork. It is, however, still used for
Federal reporting. Although supplying your Social Security Number is now
entirely optional for non-credit classes, we still request it in the
event you might wish to take advantage of Federal tax credits for
lifelong learning.
-
Email Address
We do not sell or loan email addresses to anyone! We use them only
to send
information about the classes you have registered for. You always
have the option of being removed from our mailing list.
